Extra-curricular

At Chillagoe State School we have a very popular extra curriculum music program called Chillagoe Idol, where students perform in a band. Our grade four, five, six and seven students have the opportunity to develop skills with instruments such as rhythm, lead and bass guitar, drums, keyboard and vocal. With a very well equipped music room, including three drum kits, Chillagoe State School students are often ‘breaking down the doors’ to practise. Children experience the rewards from using persistence, dedication, punctuality and teamwork while developing their musical skills, coordination and technique. The Students select the performance content from a variety of genres which they then present to the public in a minimum of two displays a year. With the support from the school and community, this program has been successful for a decade. Here are some comments from 2013 Idol performers.

“Idol is a great place to learn music, have fun and build your confidence. In Idol you have to work extremely hard during lunchtime, before school and after school.  We have singing lessons every Tuesday so overall, Idol is a great place to get a good education and try something new.”

“I think Idol is great fun! When I cant do something at first and I eventually get it, I feel proud and happy. We can have lots of fun playing music with our friends.”

“I love doing Idol because it’s great fun and I feel free from everything else. We get to have fun with our friends and just have a great time, even though it is sometimes hard work. Sometimes I am nervous before we play but after I feel really good. After 4 years of playing, I have much more confidence.”

“I love music and our wonderful music teacher, Miss Penny. It’s heaps of fun playing and performing with our school band. I have gained confidence with getting up on stage and when doing speeches.”

“I never really liked school but now I do because music is fun and it gives me a good education. I sometimes find it hard when we learn new drum patterns but it is fun as well. I love doing it!”

“I think that I have gained confidence from Idol and I like learning new things on the drums. I feel excited and nervous at the same time when we perform on stage. I feel really good when we finished performing but not because it’s over.”

“Idol teaches you so much. I have learnt how to play guitar and keep going till I get it better.  At Idol you can let your mind go free and listen to the music we are making.  When I get something wrong, Ms Penny puts confidence back in me. Idol is the best!”
